Area Developer

A franchisee who has purchased the right to open multiple units within a defined territory.

Area Representative

An individual authorized by the franchisor to sell franchises and provide support within a region.

Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD)

A legal document franchisors must provide to prospective franchisees before any sale.

Franchise Fee

A one-time upfront fee paid to the franchisor to join the franchise system.

Franchisor

The company that owns a franchise system and licenses its brand and systems to franchisees.

Franchisee

An individual or entity that purchases the right to operate a franchise location from the franchisor.

FTC Franchise Rule

Federal regulation requiring franchisors to disclose material information to prospective buyers via the FDD.

Item 19 (Financial Performance Representation)

The FDD section where franchisors optionally disclose actual or projected unit financial performance.

Liquid Capital

The cash or easily converted assets a prospective franchisee must have readily available.

M

Master Franchise

A type of franchise agreement where one party acquires the right to sub-franchise within a region.

Multi-Unit Franchise

Owning and operating more than one franchise location under the same brand.

Net Worth Requirement

The minimum total financial value (assets minus liabilities) required to qualify for a franchise.

Protected Territory

A defined area where the franchisor agrees not to open competing units or franchise locations.

Royalty Fee

An ongoing fee paid by the franchisee to the franchisor, typically a percentage of gross sales.

Renewal Fee

A fee paid by the franchisee to renew their franchise agreement at the end of the term.

SBA Loan

A Small Business Administration-backed loan commonly used to finance franchise purchases.

Territory

Training Fee
